The Blueshirts brought in the biggest free agent of the offseason Brad Richards to the Big Apple. Richards is the number one center that the Rangers have been longing for quite some time. When inking Richards for nine-years and $60-million the Rangers hope he and Marian Gaborik will gel together and give the Rangers one of the best combos in the NHL. Richards and Gaborik will be particularly dangerous on the power play. Richards scored 28 goals and notched 49 assists during his contract year last year for the Dallas Stars. Seven of Richards goals came while on the PP, while 22 of his 49 assists were on the man advantage.

New York also added some grit and size to their lineup when they signed former Penguin Mike Rupp. Rupp will continue to be a thorn in the side of his opponents in the Atlantic division.
If there is one glaring weakness on the Rangers, it’s their young defensive corps. The brought back Steve Eminger, which helps a little, they also traded for defensemen Tim Erixon, who they believe can contribute in their top 6, despite never playing in an NHL game.

All in all it seems as if General Manager Glen Sather played it relatively safe this offseason after years of over spending. The Richards contract may be a little long, but the price is right in the ballpark for a player of his caliber. Has Sather learned his lesson?
