Game 5 Preview – Penguins at Lightning

By: Casey Johnston (@CaseyR82)

Last Game for the Pens:  Last night, a 6-3 loss to the Florida Panthers.  Evgeni Malkin and Pascal Dupuis scored their first goals of the year while Craig Adams added his third.  Other than that, the game was mostly in the hands of the Panthers.  Brad Boyes scored two goals while Aleksander Barkov had a goal and two assists.  Tomas Fleischmann and Kris Versteeg added goals of their own.  Jeff Zatkoff looked rough in his NHL debut as he stopped only 24 of 30 shots.

Last Game for the Lightning:  Thursday, a 7-2 win over the Panthers.  Steven Stamkos had a hat trick while Valtteri Filpula added two of his own.  Four other Lightning players had multi-point games.  Ben Bishop faced only 21 shots and stopped 19 of them.

Last Time These Two Teams Met:  April 11, 2013.  The Penguins beat the Lightning 6-3 with the help of two goals and an assist from Jussi Jokinen.  Tanner Glass scored his first goal in a Penguin uniform.

Story of the Game:  The Penguins suffered their first loss of the season against the Panthers, and it was a doozy of a loss.  It’s early and there’s nothing to panic over.  Zatkoff, more than everyone else, needs to move on and be ready the next time his name is called (which may not be until the next set of back-to-back games in two weeks).  For the now, the Penguins’ focus needs to be on the Lightning, who are off to a surprisingly good start at 3-1 with a +5 goal differential.

Pens All-Time Record Against the Lightning:  40-28-5-4

Lightning-Killer on the Pens:  Evgeni Malkin has 14 points in his last 5 games against the Lightning.

Penguins-Killer on the Lightning: Teddy Purcell has 8 points in his last 5 games against the Penguins.
