Penguins Announce Start of Training Camp

(UPDATE: 12:12 AM – Expect defenseman Brian Strait to be at camp as well. Strait, like Bortuzzo, would have to clear waivers if sent back to the American Hockey League.)

The NHL and NHLPA have both ratified the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and signed a Memorandum of Understanding, bringing the NHL lockout to an official end. Training Camp will open on Sunday a 3:10 PM practice at Southpointe and is open to the public. The rest of the week will be at Consol Energy Center.

The Penguins will officially announce the camp roster on Sunday, but this is what we know. It includes forwards Beau Bennett Jayson Megna, and Eric Tangradi and defensemen Robert Bortuzo, Simon Despres and Briant Strait from Wilkes-Barre Scranton.

Center (5): Craig Adams, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jayson Megna, Brandon Sutter

Left-Wing (5): Matt Cooke, Tanner Glass, Dustin Jeffery, Chris Kunitz, Eric Tangradi

Right-Wing (5): Pascal Dupuis, Tyler Kennedy, James Neal, Beau Bennett, Joe Vitale

Defense (9): Robert Bortuzzo, Deryk Engelland, Simon Despres, Kris Letang, Ben Lovejoy, Paul Martin, Matt Niskanen, Brooks Orpik, Brian Strait

Goal (2): Marc-Andre Fleury, Tomas Vokoun

(26 Players)

Jayson Megna is an undrafted center who was signed by Pittsburgh in August 2012.  He’s a long shot to make the team, but general manager Ray Shero may use this as his first chance to get an up close look at the late blooming forward.

Of these players, only defenseman Robert Bortuzzo and Brian Strait would require waivers to be sent back to Wilkes-Barre if they fail to make the final cut.

After leaving Metallurg Magnitogorsk as second leading scorer in the KHL, center Evgeni Malkin arrived back in Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Training camp will be open to the public at Consol Energy Center. Player physicals will be on Sunday with practices expected to start on Monday. More information will be posted as camp schedules become available.

@PensNation_Ken I predict the totally predictable will happen and there will be no surprises. That’s how Shero and Byslma roll.
