Pittsburgh Penguins 2015 Rookie Tournament Roster

By Larry Snyder

Coming up this weekend, the Pittsburgh Penguins send 26 prospects to a four-team rookie tournament at Budweiser Gardens in London, Ontario. The Pens have two top draft selections ready to participate.

The Penguins chose Derrick Pouliot with the eighth pick overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot, 208-pound defenseman played in 34 contests with the Black and Gold last season. The Estevan, Saskatchewan native put up two goals and five assists for a total of seven points. Pouliot scored a goal on his first National Hockey League shot in his debut Dec. 20 against the Florida Panthers.

The other top choice is right wing Daniel Sprong, who was the Pens top choice in the 2015 draft. The 6-foot, 180-pound forward signed a three year, entry level deal at the end of August. The Amsterdam, Netherlands native recorded 39 goals and 49 assists for 88 points as a member of the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

A trio of forwards on the roster are right wing Bryan Rust, who was taken third in 2010, left wing Scott Wilson, who was selected in the seventh round of the 2011 draft, and Oskar Sundqvist, the Pens third pick in the 2012 draft.

Goaltender Matt Murray, the 2014 American Hockey League Rookie of the Year, was drafted in the third round of the 2012 draft. He is sharing the net with Tristan Jarry, who was the Pens’ top choice in 2013. Because the Penguins had traded away the first-round pick, he was chosen in the second round.

Murray’s teammate, left wing Conor Sheary, will show what he can do on the ice. Sheary was the scoring leader for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL in both the regular season and the playoffs.

The Black and Gold prospects are joined on the ice by squads of newcomers from the Montreal Canadiens, the Ottawa Senators, and the host Toronto Maple Leafs. Ottawa will have two first-round draft picks on their bench: defenseman Thomas Chabot, selected 18th overvall in 2015, and left wing Matt Puempel taken 24th in 2011.

Among the players on the Montreal roster is 2015 first-round pick defenseman Noah Juulsen, who was selected 26th overall. He is joined by right wing Michael McCarron, chosen 25th overall in 2014, and fellow right wing Nikita Scherbak, selected 26th overall in 2014.

The Maple Leaf squad has Toronto’s first-round selection, fourth overall, in this year’s NHL Entry Draft, center Mitch Marner. Also lacing up the skates are former first-round selections center William Nylander, eighth overall in 2014, former Pens prospect right wing Kasperi Kapanen, 22nd overall in 2014, and center Frederik Gauthier, 21st overall in 2013.

The tournament will see the debut of the 2015-2016 WBS Penguins coaching staff. The team is being led by head coach Mike Sullivan and assistant coach Jay Leach.
