Pittsburgh Penguins 2017 Prospect Development Camp

By Larry Snyder

The Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins return to Cranberry Township to host 40 players to their annual prospect development camp. The event gets underway Wednesday, June 28 and wraps up Saturday, July 1 at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex.

The roster of prospects includes all six players chosen by the Black and Gold in the 2017 NHL Draft. Defenseman Zachary Lauzon, who was Pittsburgh’s first pick in the second round, has three more members of the blue line crew joining him. Clayton Phillips arrived in the third round, Antti Palojarvi in the sixth, and William Reilly in the seventh. Forwards Jan Drozg and Linus Olund were both taken in the fifth round. The Penguins drafted a total of 21 out of the 40 players invited.

UPDATE From Twitter:

Mario Lemieux’s 21-year-old son, Austin, is back for his second consecutive camp. Over the 2016-2017 campaign, the right-wing had 20 goals and 54 assists for 74 points in 49 contests with the Islanders Hockey Club of the United States Premier Hockey League, Premier Division. He accepted back in December a scholarship offer to play for Sun Devils head coach Greg Powers at Arizona State University.

Keep a careful eye on a pair of college free agents the Pens signed, forwards Zach Aston-Reese and Thomas Di Pauli as they could be ready to take the next step and come to training camp in September.

Among the Pittsburgh, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Wheeling Nailers hockey operations staff on hand to lead the camp is WBS head coach Clark Donatelli along with his assistants Chris Taylor and J.D. Forrest. Also in attendance, this week is Wheeling head coach Jeff Christian and his assistant Riley Armstrong, Pens goalie coach Mike Buckley, and skills development pro Ty Hennes.
