The Pittsburgh Penguins are now apparently cap compliant after making several roster moves. Forward Andrew Ebbett and defenseman Simon Despres were sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton while forward Beau Bennett was re-assigned to Wheeling. Defenseman Harrison Ruopp was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after the Penguins placed defenseman Kris Letang on injured-reserve. In addition, defenseman Derrick Pouliot was assigned to the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL. So, what does this all mean? There is a ton of math involved, but do not panic about Bennett. This was a paper move to make the team cap compliant. Therefore, he will most likely be recalled right before the home opener on Thursday. The Penguins used this same tactic with forward Eric Tangradi in 2010. Goaltender Tomas Vokoun was also placed on injured-reserve, as expected. One of the most interesting parts of these moves is that defenseman Olli Maatta is still listed on the roster. He could be in line for a nine-game tryout in the NHL, but that has not been confirmed yet.
