Another defenseman with the last name of Samuelsson will suit up for the Pittsburgh Penguins. 22-year-old Philip Samuelsson, the son of two-time Penguins Stanley Cup champion Ulf Samuelsson, has been recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Samuelsson, Pittsburgh’s second-round choice in 2009 (61st overall), has recorded 6 assists in 26 games so far this season in the AHL. He can be very limited offensively, but is a solid defender as far as positioning goes. Samuelsson also has the ability to force some turnovers with his solid poke check. Although he would love to wear number 5 like his father did with Pittsburgh in the 1990′s, that number is already taken by defenseman Deryk Engelland. Coincidentally, Samuelsson will be taking Engelland’s spot on the roster since Engelland will be in New York City for a hearing with the NHL Player Safety Department on Wednesday for a hit last night on Detroit’s Justin Abdelkader. Tonight’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs will be Samuelsson’s NHL debut. To make room for Samuelsson, the Penguins placed defenseman Kris Letang on injured-reserve.
