With only 5 days left until the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft in Florida, we will be breaking down a prospect each day up until June 26th. Today we look at Czech defenseman Jakub Zboril.

Defenseman Jakub Zboril, Saint John (QMJHL), 18 years old

Height: 6’1”, Weight: 184 pounds, Shoots: Left

NHL Central Scouting: 12th among North American Skaters

TSN: 26th among all players

2014-15 Stats: 44 games, 13 goals, 20 assists, 33 points, 73 penalty minutes

NHL hockey representation from the Czech Republic is officially back on the map as a result of Pavel Zacha and defenseman Jakub Zboril. After several years without any big players from the Czech Republic, there is a possibility that Zacha and Zboril get drafted in the first round this year. Zboril, who was the 5th overall pick in the CHL Import Draft, played for the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL this past season and lived up to the high expectations. The 6-foot-1 defenseman’s 13 goals in 44 games was the most goals scored by a rookie defenseman in Sea Dogs history. His 44 points were the third most among rookie defenseman in the QMJHL. He also added a goal and 2 assists in 5 playoff games this past year. Zboril is extremely dangerous on the power play. He is an ideal power play quarterback who has a heavy slap shot, great vision and the ability to set up his teammates. He has great top end speed and can cover a lot of ice with his excellent skills with his skates. While his defensive positioning could improve. Zboril is very physical and is great at clearing traffic in front of the net. He’s definitely not afraid to deliver a big hit. Although that is considered a good thing, sometimes his timing is off and that allows opposing players to get around him. That should improve as he matures, though. Zboril seems to have his head on straight, as he is always trying to improve his game. It’s a bit strange that TSN rated him so low, but this guy definitely has the talent to be taken earlier than 26th overall. He has the potential to be a top pairing defenseman who can play in all situations. If not a top pairing guy, he could at the very least be a good second pairing defenseman who can run the power play. In USA Today’s mock draft, he was selected by the Boston Bruins 14th overall. That would be a great fit for both parties as Zdeno Chara is starting to decline. Regardless, whoever grabs Zboril will get a great player who should be in the NHL in a couple years.
