THE SCOOP: Defenseman Cody Ceci was not exactly considered a first round pick a few months ago when he was ranked 16th among North American skaters. Ceci’s stock went through the roof after a monstrous 2011-12 season with the Ottawa 67′s of the OHL. After notching 34 points in 68 games with Ottawa during the 2010-11 season, many saw Ceci as a decent prospect. This past season, he played in 64 games and scored 26 more points than he did a season ago. His mark of 60 points (17 goals and 43 assists) ranked second among all defensemen in the OHL. All of the scouts took notice of his dominance this season as he jumped to the 6th best North American skater. Ceci has a lot of good assets to showcase on an NHL team: size, a hard shot, and a great puck-mover. He will need some work on his defense, but that should not be a problem once he gets used to professional hockey with all of his new coaches and teammates. Scouts have seen Ceci cheat in his own zone many times, which will not translate well in the NHL. However, they have also seen him improve defensively each season. The Scouting Report had this to say about Ceci: “As it stands, Ceci has to be considered one of the premier defensemen not only in the OHL, but the Canadian Hockey League as a whole. He plays a strong offensive game and has developed into an exceptional puck mover and one of the top powerplay players in the OHL. Ceci has a big shot and does a good job distributing the puck and activating in the offensive zone. His defensive game has improved considerably since his 16-year-old season, but he still needs to show an increased commitment to the defensive end. As an 18-year-old, Ceci is a little ahead in the development curve of some of the other defensemen in the draft, but his strong offensive upside makes him a quality pick in this range.” He has been projected to be taken by the Vancouver Canucks and the Anaheim Ducks in a few mock drafts. Although Ceci will need to polish his defensive game, one NHL team will not be able to pass up a big, fast, right-handed defenseman with so much offensive upside. His 2011-12 campaign will most likely lead to a first round selection.
