Darren Dreger of TSN had this to say about James Neal today: “Sources say the Dallas Stars and Pittsburgh Penguins may be working on a deal involving two high quality players. It’s believed the Pens are willing to move defenceman Alex Goligoski for the right forward, and a trade involving Stars winger James Neal has been discussed.”
This rumor has everyone getting fired up about the Penguins trade deadline plans. The Goligoski-Neal trade has been a rumor for a long time now, but Dreger confirmed it. Neal, a 23 year old versatile winger, would fit in the Penguins long term plans very well. He also has size which is useful in front of the net. His cap hit is affordable for this season and next season: $2.875 million. He will be a restricted free agent after next season. Alex Goligoski is having a good second full season in the NHL and has obviously caught the eye of the Dallas Stars. These two teams are great trade partners right now because the Stars have a scoring winger and the Penguins have a puck moving defenseman. Neal has played in every game this season and is on pace for his highest goal total in his professional career. The trade will not be straight up, by the way. The Penguins would probably have to throw something else in. Be sure to follow our Twitter @ThePensNation for the latest updates!
