Many of you fans probably remember Versteeg from his short time with the Chicago Blackhawks. He helped them win the Stanley Cup last season by scoring 6 goals and recording 14 points in the playoffs. After the season, he was one of the many Chicago salary cap casualties. In late June, Versteeg and a prospect were traded to Toronto for Viktor Stalberg and two Toronto prospects.
Being only 24 years old is a big plus on acquiring Versteeg. He is under contract for next season with a $3.083 million cap hit. Toronto has said that they are going to continue moving players and Versteeg may be one of them. Last night, the Penguins had two scouts in attendance at the Maple Leafs game against the New Jersey Devils. Versteeg was likely one player they were watching. The Canadian forward was drafted 134th overall in the 2004 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins. He has scored at least 20 goals in both of his first two seasons in the NHL. Versteeg is known for his offensive instincts, but is considered a small player for the NHL level.
